A rainwater retaining basin is a temporary water storage zone, buried or in the open with a delayed outflow.
It is a technique of rainwater storage during the rainfall in urbanized zones or at the seashore. It allows the control and the storage of the rainwater streaming and prevents the saturation of the soils by normalizing the important flow of the water.

For the drainage networks which are not connected to the public drainage network, the storage and treatment basin prevents the pollution and the saturation of the soils by purifying and filtering the domestic water.
